Commission Day
by Darryl Manning 9/02/01
INTRO: A few months ago, the Lord gave me a picture in my mind of us commissioning our people and sending them out like Jesus did to do the works of Christ. It was a repeat of what Jesus did with His disciples. Every few weeks, I would enquire of the Lord, is it time? No response came. Last night at prayer the Lord began to give me commissioning statements and this morning He said, “This is the Day.”
In one day, the disciples went from no power to great power
Matt 10: 1And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and £Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4Simon the £Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
5These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying:… as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, £raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
· Freely received the power – now freely give of the power.
· These were not so perfect followers. Not even baptized in the Holy Spirit
Power not given to the wise or prudent but to babes
Luke 10: 17Then the £seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
18And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but £rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.
· Wise = marked by the exercise of good judgment or common sense in practical matters
· Pudent= mentally put together-careful and sensible; marked by sound judgment
· Bbe=figuratively a simple minded person, an immature Christian
Lack of power indicates lack of faith
Matt. 17:17Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
19Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”
20So Jesus said to them, “Because of your £unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
· Unbelief=Pðéóôßá apistia ap-is-tee'-ah; faithlessness, that is, (negatively) disbelief (want of Christian faith), or (positively) unfaithfulness (disobedience):—unbelief.
Signs will follow those who believe
Mark 16: 17And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18they£ will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
