The purpose of this course of study is to two-fold.

  1. First we want to prepare people to give personal ministry to others during the worship service, by appointment, or wherever God gives a divine appointment.
  2. Second, we want to learn how we can receive personal ministry more effectively from other Christians.

All Christians are in need of personal ministry in their lives. In the Bible, salvation, healing, deliverance, Holy Spirit baptism, power for special service, spiritual gifts, financial blessing, resurrection from death, etc. were all given by God through the personal ministry of one person to another.

There are two aspects of personal ministry we will look at in our lesson today.

  1. First, in our Sunday School lesson today we will look at the doctrine of the laying on of hands.
  2. Second, in the sermon, today we will look at how God has commissioned and sent those who accept His Lordship. We will see that we are to go “in the name of the Lord” doing the works He did and even greater.

The spiritual ministry of “laying on of hands” is listed as a foundational principle of Christ and is instrumental in much of the personal ministry spoken of in the Bible.

Laying on of hands is a foundational principle of Christ.

Heb. 6: 1Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3And this £we will do if God permits.

The Jewish people understood at least some of the uses of laying on of hands.

·         Mark 5: 22And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet 23and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.” 24So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him…..

5While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”

36As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” 37And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 38Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. 39When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.”

40And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. 41Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age.

·         Mark 5: 25Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. 27When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” 29Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. 30And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”……… “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

1.      Laying on of hands requires faith. Faith on the part of the one ministering and faith in the one receiving ministry.

2.      When contact is made, power is transmitted from one to the other.

  • Elisha raises the Shunamite’s son by laying on him 2 times (2 Kings. 4)
  • Even though dead, there was enough power resident in the bones of Elisha to raise a dead man to life. 2 Kings 13: 21So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.)
  • Elisha received power to minister when he was given the mantle of Elijah (2 Kings 2)

Jesus commissioned believers to lay hands on the sick

Mark 16: 16He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18they£ will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Laying on of hands were used to minister the Holy Spirit to new believers

Acts 8: 14Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Laying on of hands were used to minister healing and the Holy Spirit by a “certain disciple

Acts 9: 10Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”

11So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. 12And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.”… 17And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord £Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.

Laying on of hands were used to minister spiritual gifts

1 Tim. 4: 14Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.

2 Tim. 1: 6Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

Rom 1:11 11For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established

Laying on of hands were used to transmit blessings

Gen. 48: 12So Joseph brought them from beside his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth. 13And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him. 14Then Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn……..17Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

19But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”

20So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will bless, saying, ‘May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’” And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

Laying on of hands were used to transfer and empower leadership

Numbers 27: 18And the LORD said to Moses: “Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; …

Deut. 34: 9Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Saul (Paul) and Barnabas sent out: Acts 13: 2As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

The Use of Prophecy in Personal Ministry

August 5, 2001

PROPHECY:  A divinely inspired prediction, instruction, or exhortation.  Usually given by a prophet or through the spiritual gift of prophecy.

Used to reveal facts that establish God’s presence and power, especially to unbelievers. (Unbelieving believers too.)

·         1 Cor. 14: 24But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. 25£And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

Examples:

·         John 4: 17The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.” 19The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.

·         John 1: 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” 48Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Used to give words of edification and exhortation and comfort.

·        1 Cor. 14: 3But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

·         Acts 17: 21But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss. 22And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. 23For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, 24saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ 25Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me. 26However, we must run aground on a certain island.”

·         Acts 20: 9And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 10But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, “Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.” 11Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed. 12And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted.

Used to bring healing and deliverance

·         Psalm 107:19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. 20             He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.

·         John 9: 6When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.

Prophecy is also used to impart spiritual gifts (1 Timothy 4:16) to reveal evil in the church, (Acts 5:3), to predict the future. (Acts 11:28)

New Testament prophets and the gift of prophecy are not the same

·         Eph. 4: 11And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ…

·         Rom. 12: 6Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith…

·         Acts 21: 8On the next day we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. 9Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. 10And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”

·         1 Cor. 14: 1Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

·         1 Cor. 14: 29Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. 30But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.

Ø      The spiritual gift of prophesy does not make one a prophet.

Ø      St. Paul encourages all believers to desire and pursue the gift of prophecy.

Ø      It may be that many Spirit filled believers are able to prophesy with proper instruction.

Ø      It seems that St. Paul encourages believers to learn to prophesy by practicing in the presence of those who are skilled so it can be judged.

PRACTICAL INSTRUCTION

Normally the Holy Spirit does not overpower you with a prophetic word. (This did happen on a couple of occasions in the Old Testament. Saul comes to mind. However, this is not the norm.)

·         1 Cor. 14: 30But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

Five common ways the Lord may give you a prophecy. (Many prophecies contain a “word of knowledge” that reveals something, gives direction for something, or that brings a word of encouragement .)

1.      See it in a picture. (this has been my experience a few times.)

2.      See it in print. (Fred Grewe, Ministry trainer for Randy Clark and others)

3.      Hear it audibly or inaudibly in your mind.

Matt. 10: 27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.

4.      Feel it in a physical sensation. (Randy Clark and others)

5.      Sense or discern it in your spirit. (Since anxiety, inferiority, fear, etc. Many have demonic oppression that can be discerned in the spirit.)

6.      Say it with inspired speech. (ex. Anna and Simeon when they saw the Christ Child.)

Suggestions to help you move into the prophetic

1.      Recognize that the power of God accompanies the prophetic word of God. Little will be done without it.

2.      Recognize that God can use “little ole you” in the prophetic. He even used a donkey in the Old Testament.

3.      Practice in your seat as others are being prayed over. (Ex. Dona’s prophetic words in Dad’s revival.)

4.      When you are praying over an individual, take time to receive the prophecy that is needed.

5.      Make sure someone who can help judge the prophecy is praying with you and can hear what you say to the person you are praying for. Especially no predictive prophecy without conferring with others for confirmation.

6.      Coach your prophecy in words that let the other person know they are to judge the prophecy. Say something like this at the beginning or end for your prophecy. “This is what the Lord has given me but you need to discern if it is really for you or not.”

Watch and pray. See what God is doing and minister there.

Healing

August 19, 2001

INTRO:  Of all the miraculous miracles that substantiated the ministry of Jesus, healing is perhaps the one we think of first and foremost.

God expects his people to be healed and requires his ministers to bring healing to his people.

Ezekiel 34:1And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD to the shepherds: “Woe to the shepherds …  the weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick

Jesus listed healing as one of the signs he was fulfilling from the Old Testament that proved who he was.

·        Matt 8: 16When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.”£

·        Luke 7: 20When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’” 21And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight. 22Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.

The ministry of healing was to continue in the church after Jesus ascension

·        Healing is in the commission given by Jesus

Mark 16: 17And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name…they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

·        Healing is one of the Spiritual gifts given to believers in the church

1 Cor. 12: 7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. ….to another gifs of thealing by that one Spirit,

·        Healing should be a highly desired gift by believers

1 Cor. 12: 31But earnestly desire the £best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way

·        A desire to be used in healing gifts is a function of love and of compassion

1 Cor. 13: 1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

Matt. 14: 14And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

To minister healing one must be sure of God’s will concerning healing.

·        Healing is in the atonement and is for all believers

1 Peter 2: 24who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.

·        Healing is “the children’s bread”

Matt. 15: 21Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

23But He answered her not a word.

And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”

24But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

25Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

26But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”

27And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

28Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Praying for those who come forward for healing

·        Start by listening for a word of knowledge.

John 5: 5Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”

·        Look for physical manifestations of God’s presence (Shaking, crying, eyelids moving, a face that just “pops out at you”, one who is worshipping, etc.)

Ø      Pray with your eyes open so you can “see what the Father is doing.”

John 5:18 “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

Ø      All manifestations are not of God – Some are flesh – Some caused by Satan & demonic

·        The healing interview - a necessity in many cases

Mark 9: 21So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?”

1.      Conduct the interview on two planes

§         Hear the answers with you natural ear

§         Hear the answers with your spiritual ear

2.      Start by asking “Are you saved?” Healing is the Children’s Bread, however God can and will heal others at times. (Naaman, Syro-Phonecian woman) God likes to prove his power to non-believers.

3.      Not a “medical” interview. Do not get overly involved in details of the sickness. Use simple questions.

§         “Where does it hurt?”

§         “How long has it hurt?”

§         “What was happening in your life when it started to hurt?”

4.      The interview’s purpose is to

§         Discover, if possible, a cause of the sickness. (Sin, hurt and bitterness, injury, disappointment, etc.)

John 5: 14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”

·        Many sicknesses in the scripture are tied to the demonic

Luke 13: 10Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. 12But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” 13And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God…. 16So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?”

·        Some sicknesses are for the Glory of God – Just waiting for the right time to bring glory to God

John 9: 1Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.

The Healing Prayer

August 26, 2001

Dealing with sickness caused by sin.

·        Lead the person in repentance prayers. If their sin has caused injury to another person, help them purpose to confess their sin to that person and repent of it.

Ø      Be sure to help the person get specific on defining their offense and how it hurt those affected by it, especially how it damaged their relationship with God.

Ø      It is important that a person be truly sorry for their sin for repentance to be effective. (2 Cor. 7: 10For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation.. )

Ø      Renounce each sin specifically

Dealing with sickness caused by un-forgiveness, bitterness, disappointment, etc. (These may be sins against people or God or both.)

·        Help the person understand that only God can judge those who offend. Only He can see what is intentional and only He knows the motives of the person’s heart.

·        Lead the person in prayers.

Ø      Forgive the offender

Ø      Forgive God

Ø      Forgive themselves

Ø      Renounce each sin specifically

Deliverance from the demonic.

“In the United States you get people forgiven, but you don’t get them free.” –Carlos Anacondia

Most cases of habitual sin, un-forgiveness, and bitterness include demonic influence or worse. If the person manifests* demonic activity while you are dealing with repentance and forgiveness you may need to go back and forth between deliverance and repentance to be successful. Get rid of every “root of bitterness.”

*a physical sign that a demon is at work in the individual.

After a person has thoroughly repented of sin, the demons have no legal right to continue their work. In most cases, it is usually a simple matter to minister deliverance at this point.

·        Renounce each sin

·        Deliverance prayer example for sexual sin. (Primary evil spirits are hatred, fear, and occultism.)

Ø      I have repented of my sexual sin and perverted sexual activities. Jesus has forgiven me!

Ø      In the Name of Jesus I renounce sexual sin and perverted sexual activities. I turn away from them.

Ø      In the Name of Jesus I break the power of sexual sin in my life.

Ø      I break the hold of all demonic spirits of perversion and sexual sin. Jesus has forgiven my sexual sins and your power over me is broken. You have no more rights to me.

Ø      Now, in the Name of Jesus I cast you out. I command you to go now in the Name of Jesus.

Ø      Thank you Jesus. You are setting me free!

·        Reinforcing prayer by the ministry person. Go back through the prayer above and agree with each point.

·         Hard cases may require deeper repentance and renunciation or it may require a deeper level of spiritual power by the ministry person. It might require a specialist in deliverance.

(Matt. 17: 21£However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”)

Healing prayers

·        If the cause of the sickness was sin, there is a great likelihood the sickness has a spirit of infirmity tied to it. Lead the person through a simple prayer of deliverance from this spirit. Reinforce the prayer as before.

·        For others causes: Pray quietly in the spirit and ask for guidance from the Holy Spirit in how to pray.

Ø      A prayer of petition simply asks the Father for healing. Put the Lord in remembrance of His covenant of healing for His people.

Isa.43: 25“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins. 2Put Me in remembrance…

Ø      A prayer of intercession motivated by compassion for the individual

Ø       A prayer of command Mark 5: 34And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

Ø       A prayer of pronouncement: “your faith has made you well”

 As you pray

Ø      Keep your eyes open and look for supernatural phenomena. (See what the Father is doing.)

Ø      Listen for any direction the Holy Spirit wants you to take in your prayers

Ø      Don’t be afraid to stop and ask questions.

o       “How are we doing?”

o       Is the Lord speaking to you about anything we need to pray about?

 Stop praying when:

Ø      When the person gets healed or there are visible signs the person has received a witness from the Holy Spirit that they are healed. (Ex. Great joy. A victory dance or shout, etc.

Ø      When the Holy Spirit tells you it’s over

Ø      When you can’t think of anything else and you are not gaining ground.

Ø      When the person gives an indication they are ready to end the prayer time.

 Post prayer admonitions

Ø      Ask the person if they feel they have been healed or if they have received any assurance about being healed. If the person is healed or has received a witness of healing, warn them about the efforts the devil will make to steal the healing. Encourage them to testify about their healing or assurance.

Ø      If God has given no healing or no assurance of healing, encourage the person that not all healings come immediately. Some are not even accompanied by any type of feeling.

Ø      Encourage the person in the promise of healing.

Ø      Get the person’s phone number and make a plan to do one of the following. Check back with them.

1.      Begin and continue to praise God for the healing in spite of any symptoms that continue.

2.      Come back for more prayer. Offer to pray and fast with them (if appropriate) until victory is achieved.

3.      You might offer to find another person who is especially gifted in healing to pray with the person.

PRACTICAL ITEMS

Try to pray in teams of two or three. Jesus sent disciples in pairs. (Never pray in a room alone with a person of the opposite sex.)

Don’t make inappropriate physical contact.

Anything prayed for is to be held in confidence unless permission has been granted to share. (Exception would be some
